Protey Temen b. 1984

Biography

“Soft Links is about absent equations and abstract visual notation, presenting a thoughtful connection between reason and imagination. Inspired by relative explanations and object schemes, the selection of works creates the subtle relationships between knowledge and research that tie together seemingly distant concepts into a gap in understanding. I want to evoke speculative scenarios in which expected answers remain elusive, yet they captivate and appeal to our innate curiosity.”

"In the future, paper will be an artefact - the original medium to which digital media refers." With these words, mixed media artist Protey Temen describes the interface between virtual and analogue (image) worlds and his personal practice. His work spans drawing, video art, books and installations, in which he depicts scientific diagrams, model-like interferences and universal connections. At first glance, his works, whether digital or analogue, appear to be illustrations of scientific dissertations rather than works of art. Whichever genre he chooses, the drawings and labelling do not make rational sense. Temen was born into a family of scientists in 1984: his grandfather was a maths teacher and his parents studied ichthyology. His artistic grandmother was to have the strongest influence on his profession. Temen's practice is essentially "medial", as his works visually and emotionally translate a world of science that is decoupled from society. Research results that experts send around the world in real time through optical fibres are not comprehensible to the general public. Temen shows the feeling and the idea of what science would look like if it were a picture.
