Monika Grzymala b. 1970

Overview
The gesture as a note of movement in space: Monika Grzymala, born in Poland in 1970 and now based in Berlin, is a contemporary artist known for her spatial drawings and site-specific interventions. Trained as a stone sculptor, she deepened her studies at the art academies in Karlsruhe, Kassel and Hamburg. Her profound understanding of physical interventions on the material has undergone several transformations until Grzymala's artistic practice found its current form: dematerialization through space and re-materialization as a notated gesture. Grzymala's versatile work encompasses diverse media, from adhesive tapes and sculptural molding processes to graphite, handmade paper and, since 2018, 3D drawings in mixed reality (VR/AR). Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including at the Drawing Center New York, MoMA New York, the Drawing Room London and the 18th Biennale of Sydney. She has taught Experimental Drawing and Media Art at the HBK Braunschweig and the University of Applied Arts Vienna. In 2022, Hatje Cantz published monographs on her artistic work and her "Zeitbuch 2022-2016".

Monika Grzymala is a contemporary graphic and installation artist specializing in spatial drawing and site-specific intervention. After training as a stone sculptor, she studied at the art academies in Karlsruhe, Kassel and Hamburg. Grzymala works with a variety of media as a drawing gesture in space. For her installations and spatial drawings, she uses materials such as adhesive tape, sculptural molding techniques, found objects, film, graphite, brush drawing, handmade paper, scenography, performance and, since 2018, 3D drawing in mixed reality (VR/AR).
