Margareta Hesse German, b. 1956
Margareta Hesse, who lives in Berlin, has developed a diverse artistic language based on painting and working with translucent materials, which includes object art, painting, laser installations and video works. Margareta Hesse studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has taught the basics of artistic design and artistic projects as a professor at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. She has been awarded the art prize of the city of Hamm, the district of Berlin-Charlottenburg/Wilmersdorf and the Darmstadt Secession as well as the Hoesch artist grant for the "Werkkunst" project in Dortmund. The exploration of light and translucency in the layered paintings led to work with pure light in space in 2008 - to the development of the first installations with bundled laser light, which subsequently unfolded into walk-in, expansive installations and light sculptures. Since then, she has realized these in ever new variations in major national and international projects, including the Reservatório da Patriarcal in Lisbon (Portugal), the Light Art Biennale in Mantua (Italy) and the international light art project "INTERFERENCE" in Tunis (Tunisia). In 2023, institutional solo exhibitions were dedicated to Hesse at the Center for International Light Art (ZfIL) in Unna and the Center for Contemporary Art (ZAK) in Berlin. Her works are represented in public and private collections, including the Ministry of Culture in Düsseldorf, the Gustav Lübcke Museum in Hamm, the Center for International Light Art in Unna (ZfIL) and the Ahlen Art Museum.
