Urban Light, movements in public space made visible by light, was created in 1998 in the context of Kuball’s German contribution to the São Paulo Biennial. An open aperture traced paths where street life takes place, leaving them behind in the form of luminous traces. In this way, eight motifs were created during the Bienal, taken in 1998 and produced in 2000. The megapolis of São Paulo, with its 22 million inhabitants, provides the perfect setting for such an abstract coding of movement and space. The work reflects the ambivalence between the presence of lights in urban space, for example in the form of neon signs or lamps, and the simultaneous absence of art in the Brazilian public sphere.
